Lately I’ve been working sequences where I integrate dance with tech. This particular one is my practicing the spiral kick sequence. Ideally, I’d lift the leg as it spirals in and then kick as it spirals out, holding it up in between. Obviously it needs work, but it’s a super fun sequence for me as a poi dancer!

While I was struggling to find my flow this week, I put on a pair of sunglasses, at night, and got the idea to try to spin to the song. Sadly, I didn’t really have a remix that inspired me that much but I thought the idea was fun, so here it is.

I was so in my head while doing this spinning even though, when I look at it, aside from the obvious spot where I stop, it really wasn’t as out of flow as I was experiencing myself to be. Fascinating to have the reflection of the camera and the ability to analyze what I thought in the moment against what I see on screen.

This clip is one of the rejected attempts at getting 30 seconds of tech flow. When I look at the clip it looks far better than it felt when I was doing the moves, and, overall, my experience when I shot this (Monday of this week and today is Friday) was that I had a hard time catching my flow.

As part of a collaborative video being put out by the Tech Poi Group on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_101158966616545&ap=1 ), I put together this 30 second clip which is part of a longer set that is forthcoming.

Here’s the two parts of the clip Angela shot at the Temple of Poi monthly fire jam in San Francisco — this one being held at the Ferry Building. The song is by Ronald Jenkees.
What I loved most about this set was that I had been struggling with my flow earlier in the week and I had thought I’d lost my poi flow — an odd thing to confront after 11 years of spinning poi!
This set certainly proves otherwise — and you can tell in the first part of the clip that I really am loving dancing.
The LED poi are not commercially available (and there are no plans for them to be). They are constructed by a friend and student of mine who has been working on them on the side for coming up on a year. They have a remote control glove (which he was using) to change the LED patterns. I look forward to seeing the next revision of the lights which will be even better, I’m sure, and hopefully shooting video in a slightly less lit location with an HD camera so the lights look more clear.

I’ve been inspired to focus on specific transitions and adding more dance to them. Recently I was using the double up jedi stalls with a weave turn around. Here I’m using a 5 beat weave turn around with a spiral and attempts at a kick. Certainly it needs to be smoothed out so the kick really matches with the movement — which is closest at the end of this video.

Inspired by the success with the jump that spontaneously came upon me in practice yesterday, this set was focused on adding ease to my jumps with the hoop. Unexpectedly I also found myself doing this awesome opening that included the fairly well executed isolations — well, at least for me. Definitely progress. Yippie!
